How to Use LinkedIn to Get the Job of Your Dreams

Picture this: You just received your offer letter for the exact position you have been looking for at your dream company. The company aligns with your values, offers benefits beyond what you could even imagine, and they have many avenues of opportunity for steady growth within their organization. Everything once seemed unattainable, but you took a chance, put in the work, and it paid off.

LinkedIn is such a valuable resource you can utilize to get that dream job you’ve been seeking for years. Being very specific with your professional goals will allow you to fully utilize the platform to get what you want now. Take a piece of paper and write your name on it, and underneath write your dream title at your dream company. Truly visualize the LinkedIn post sharing your recent career move. Knowing exactly what you want is the first step to getting there.

Here are a few useful tips to secure your dream job through LinkedIn:

1.Figure out exactly what you are looking for. Browse roles you are interested in and find companies that align with your values and check all the right boxes. Do research and find current or past employees of these companies. Identify if they have been promoted within the company and how long it took them to move up in the organization. This will give you an understanding of your potential path and what growth opportunities are available to you.

2. Build your network first. Once you figure out where you want to work, utilize the search bar to find recruiters at your dream companies and current employees in your dream role. Send a request to connect, and write a brief message expressing your interest in expanding your network. If you are new to the industry or a recent college grad, add this information as well. Initially, do not ask for anything from them. Do not mention any specific openings or attach a resume.

3. Become a part of their community. Follow your dream company’s social media pages beyond just LinkedIn. Stay up to date on company news, attend any seminars they may conduct, and engage with their content- liking, commenting , and sharing their content. This will also make working for them seem more real.

4. Begin your outreach. Now that you have a solid network of all the right people and a better understanding of the role you want, start reaching out. Do not feel limited to just contact recruiters. Don’t go as far as reaching out  to CEO / CHRO, but you can contact higher levels in the recruitment department such as Director of Recruitment, managers, or senior managers. It is their responsibility at the end of the day to ensure the job is filled.

5. Secure referrals. Remember those connections you build with those non-recruiter employees within the company? Reach out and ask for a brief call to get a better understanding of their day-to-day. Give them a run down of your experience and your story. Building a connection with current employees will allow you to get a referral directly from them. At most companies, all referrals are contacted, at least most of the time.
